SGM Shipping Services

Investment Approach

Three disciplines. One operating philosophy.

Our thesis

Shipping is global, fragmented and operationally complex. That volatility creates opportunity for disciplined investors with operating capability.

SGM’s roots run inside the shipping industry, not adjacent to it — a maritime lineage dating to 1973. We invest where we have edge, alongside aligned partners, and we hold for the long term.

VOLATILITY CREATES OPPORTUNITY

How we invest

Every opportunity is assessed on its own terms. SGM does not deploy blind-pool capital. Each transaction begins with a clear thesis, a defined structure and a disciplined exit.

We participate as sponsor and co-investor, committing proprietary capital alongside aligned partners. For investors, we also act as asset manager under defined mandates, with full transparency.

Risk framework

Charter markets, asset values, regulation and fuel economics move on different timelines. We focus on the risks we can price and the ones we can absorb:

Entry point

pricing, age profile,
technical risk.

Counterparty

Market exposure, Charter-Party coverage, volatility & risks

Technical condition

Inspection, class history,
maintenance

Financing

Leverage matched to cash flow; currency managed.

Our operating capability is itself a risk tool we do not delegate the decisions that determine returns.

Regulation & sustainability

The industry is mid-transition: EU ETS, FuelEU Maritime, IMO 2050 and alternative fuels are reshaping asset values and costs at once. SGM treats regulation and decarbonization as investment variables priced into every underwriting, monitored across every mandate.

01

Deal Sponsorship & Co-Investment

SGM sources, structures and sponsors opportunities deal by deal, presenting each to a defined group of aligned partners family offices, institutions and industrial co-investors with a long-term horizon.
Every opportunity is underwritten on its own terms, and SGM commits proprietary capital in each one.

TYPICAL STRUCTURES

• Single-asset or small-pool acquisitions

• Joint ventures with industrial or financial co-investors

• Sale-and-leaseback and structured finance

• Special situations and distressed entry

02

Asset Management Mandates

For owners holding maritime assets without in-house operational capability, SGM provides full-spectrum asset management, a principal-grade operator under defined mandates, applying the same discipline we apply to our own capital.

SCOPE OF MANDATES

• Commercial: chartering, positioning, employment strategy

• Technical: class, maintenance, dry-docking, retrofit planning

• Financial: budgeting, reporting, cash management, hedging

• Strategic: fleet renewal, divestment timing, regulatory positioning

03

Strategic Advisory

SGM takes a limited number of advisory engagements each year where our operating background and investment perspective create real advantage over a purely financial advisor.

TYPICAL STRUCTURES

• Restructurings of distressed maritime assets or companies

• Pre-acquisition due diligence and transaction structuring

• Operational turnarounds and fleet optimization

• Strategic options reviews for owners and lenders

*We only advise where we would be comfortable to invest.*
